COLD WEATHER BEEKEEPING

Hello Everyone:

Well the cold weather is finally upon us so it’s time to think about what we can do beekeeping wise now that the holidays are behind us (I hope you all asked Santa for some beekeeping stuff).  While we have snow and cold, in approximately six weeks the hive will become active and in some cases will try to begin brood rearing so there is not much time to get things done.  Here are some things you might want to consider:

  • Check for dead hives and order replacement bees early

  • Start repairing or building necessary equipment for spring including new frames.

  • If you can and you have not done it yet, you can vaporize you hive with oxalic acid to kill the phoretic mites in the cluster.

  • Check on food stores and resupply as necessary

  • Order any supplies you will need in the spring and summer

  • Think about starting some NUCS this spring as a method of maintaining strong hives.

  • Read a book on any subject in beekeeping….may I suggest Beekeeping at Buckfast Abbey by Brother Adam.

Plenty to do before the chaos of spring so get to it so you’re prepared for a pleasurable beekeeping season.
